Psychological Testing Q & A

What is psychological testing?

The purpose of psychological testing (sometimes called an “assessment” or “evaluation”) is to uncover possible explanations about your child’s struggles at school, at home, in social settings, or within relationships. Psychological testing also helps your child’s psychiatrist to understand their strengths, how they think, the way they process information, and their default reactions and behaviors when it comes to their environment.

What does psychological testing entail?

At your first appointment, you and your child participate in an initial consultation with Dr. Valos. During this meeting, you’ll provide a developmental history of your child’s behavior and explain any current problems they are having in daily life.

If your child is old enough, Dr. Valos will also interview them to gain a deeper understanding of problems from their unique perspective.

If Dr. Valos determines that testing would be beneficial for your child, you’ll schedule a second appointment. At this session, Dr. Valos meets with your child to complete different tests and evaluations, which may focus on areas such as:

  • Cognitive abilities
  • Academic skills (reading, writing, and math)
  • Visual and auditory processing skills
  • Memory and learning
  • Problem-solving and planning
  • Social and emotional abilities

What can I expect after psychological testing?

After these tests are complete, Dr. Valos will discuss the results, and you’ll receive a written report shortly thereafter. This report includes score summaries, interpretations, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations for your child moving forward.

In some cases, the psychological testing process will allow your child’s psychiatrist to make an official diagnosis based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which may give your child eligibility for certain services or treatments.

You can share test results with your child’s teacher or care providers, so that all adults in your child’s life can support them better. The team at Psychiatric Wellness Center helps you create a blueprint for the best outcomes, whether that includes interventions, accommodations, or treatment recommendations.
